I just came across a short story by Bruce Holland Rogers, “Eminent Domain,” that defies easy classification. It appears in Space Squid, and you can call it Sci-Fi if you want, call it humor, call it speculative, or don’t call it anything… but check it out. The voice is what, for me, really carries this story.
Making excellent use of the first-person-plural narrative perspective, “Eminent Domain” tells the story of the inhabitants of a two-park town who want nothing more than another park. The city managers, however, would rather build a school or a hospital. When other visitors with other plans arrive, the town is truly disrupted.
